Everything You Need to Know About Choosing The Perfect Fragrance
Let me preface by saying that there is no perfect fragrance, what I mean by the perfect fragrance is choosing the right fragrance for you. Perfumes are like anything else meaning almost every person will have a different reaction to the same product, and shopping for perfumes unfortunately is largely decided by the look of the perfume bottle and the price of the product, and the most obvious reason for buying a perfume which is the scent is often overlooked or deemed relatively unimportant in the choosing process. Below we will provide you with a questioning process that will help you better understand your scent needs.
The 1st question to better understand this
should be: What is my style or aesthetic that I am leaning towards? Is it bold,
modern, artsy, cheery, business casual, elegant, or chic? The style choices are
almost endless but truly decoding and understanding your everyday aesthetic can
help a lot in the perfume picking process. The second question aiding
in this process is: What is a scent that you naturally gravitate towards? Is it
the smell of citrus, flowers, musk, or something else? This can help you narrow
down the scent even more. Last but not the least, what is the occasion for
which the perfume is being bought, is it office wear, going out drinking, special
occasions such as weddings Perfume or birthdays, or is it for everyday use.
Once you have the above three figured out, you can dive deep into the magical world of fragrances with a solid foundation as to what you are looking for. After asking yourself the three questions, you should investigate the concentration of the perfume that would fill your needs. There are 4 varying levels of concentration, and they are named accordingly:
1. Parfum or Perfume is the highest concentration with a concentration above
20%, lasting 12 hours. This is also usually the most expensive due to its level
of concentration.
2. Eau de Parfum contains the second-highest concentration of perfume, with a
concentration between 15-20%, lasting around 6 hours.
3. Eau de Toilette contains the third-highest concentration of perfume and usually
ranges between 5% to 15% concentration, lasting upto 4 hours.
4. Eau de Cologne has the lowest perfume concentration, below 5 % concentration
lasting only for about 2 hours.
Once you have decided the concentration
that you would like to invest in, visit or order testers and sample kits from
brands that closely align with your needs. This is a must, especially when
planning to buy costly fragrances (i.e., parfum or Eau de Parfum), make sure
you test the fragrance and keep it on for one day at least, to see how long the
fragrance lasts, how it settles on your skin, how the notes feel after certain
time periods.
This should give you enough information to
make an informed decision and fall in love with fragrances like never before.
