Do's and Dont's Of Wearing Perfume

Perfumes are a perfect addition to any outfit and can accentuate any personality in a positive manner. To do this however one must know how to apply perfumes correctly so that they can reap the benefits of this magical elixir. We will look at some techniques that have been tried and tested to make your fragrance last longer and preserve the integrity of your scents.

1.       Do: Apply directly to your skin - “The oil-loving properties of the skin make it the perfect medium for the perfume oils to attach to” says Matthew Milèo, a chemist, and former in-house fragrance expert for Chanel, “ the warmth of the skin starts the unravelling process and the scent is free to fully express itself.” For a powerful scent-to-skin adhesion, try layering perfume over body lotion or oil.

2.       Don’t: Apply to your hair - Most individuals want hair that smells amazing that’s why the current emphasis is on well-scented shampoos and conditioners. This does not transfer well when applying perfume to your hair because most perfumes are alcohol-based which damages the hair follicles. If you do end up spritzing your hair, make sure the fragrance is non-alcohol-based or water-based.

3.       Do: Dab on pulse points – When applying perfume, it is recommended to apply on spots that are naturally warm or moist such as the inside of the elbows, back of the knees, chest, and the sides of the neck. The pulse points act as natural diffusers due to the body heat-activated in those areas.

4.       Don’t: Rub into the skin – This is a common misunderstanding that applying perfume on your wrists and rubbing it together will amplify the scent, although it has the opposite effect on the fragrance and the scent should be allowed to sit on your skin to mix with your natural oils. When rubbed together, top notes will fade and evaporate.
